Alcoholism in Midrand

MIDRAND – Midrand Police Station spokesperson, Constable Eliot Mabulane said that 17 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, up to so far this month.

With recent incidents involving car crashes into state infrastructure and private property around Midrand.

The issues have had one asking. Is there a drunk and driving problem which is not being addressed in our community?

The Midrand Reporter recently had a chat with the Midrand Police Station after they conducted a drunk and driving operation around the area on October 15.

Constable Eliot Mabulane, spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station said that if a person was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, they would face prosecution that could amount to fine or direct imprisonment.

He added that this would result in one’s profile being attached to a criminal record that would limit their job opportunities and adventures in life.

“17 people have been arrested up to so far this month, we see five or more people arrested weekly especially from Thursday to Sunday due to social life. Some are arrested during reckless, negligent, and inconsiderate driving, violating the National Road Traffic Act,” said Mabulane.

Mabulane added that over the weekend, from October 15 to October 17, 11 people were arrested.

He further added that the same excessive abuse of alcohol is a huge problem because it contributes to domestic violence, loss of property, and sexual offenses which emanate from social clubs while drinking which then lead to sexual activities taking place.

He added that people should be aware that no person can give sexual consent while under the influence of alcohol.

“You can report any case related to drunken driving on 0l0 113 4716/00/02/03 and people can now download my SAPS app which helps you best to report a crime that includes corruption.

“As Midrand police, we will not tolerate any action that is perpetuated by alcohol or any offence regarded as a crime. We will always be against crime, and arrest in the form of indictment or arrest will be executed. We advise socialists to opt for e-hailing taxis or other means of transportation they know they are going to get drunk.
