Councillor: Follow up, escalate queries

MIDRAND – Ward 112 councillor Lerato Mphefo urges residents to ensure they obtain a reference number when reporting queries.

Ward 112 councillor Lerato Mphefo appealed to Midrand community members to get involved in their billing issues.

Mphefo said she has received numerous billing complaints from residents who claimed they were then wrongfully disconnected when Johannesburg Water conducted raids.

She explained that many residents do not know how to log calls and did not know how to follow up and escalate queries if, for instance, they could not reach the billing call centre, or get their emails replied.

She added that residents should take note that the billing offices have moved from Waterfall to Randjies. “Community members can do walk-ins at 15th Road in Randjies, at the Region A offices. They can also send emails to regionarevenue@joburg.org.za for help with queries. When you send through an email, you should make sure that someone acknowledges that email to show that someone is attending to it.

“You should also make sure that you get a reference number to show that someone is working on your query and keep on following up on it. Because sometimes calls are closed without feedback being given to a complainant. Which leads to officials disconnecting your water or electricity.”

She said that after those basic actions have been taken and nothing happens, that is when community members should escalate the matter to her as a councillor.

Mphefo added that many residents suffered on their own, not knowing that she as a councillor was there to help. Her mandate is to oversee the City’s entities and make the lives of residents easier.
