Shelter sets record straight

MIDRAND – The animal welfare organisation apologised for an article which they deemed was taken out of context.

Paws R Us would like to apologise to their clients, community members and their landlady.

This follows the article, Paws R Us Needs A Home, which was published in the Midrand Reporter [Week ending September 10] where co-director Tanya Nel mentioned that their yard was a ‘health hazard infested with hookworms and parasites’. This after she had explained that they were looking for new premises to accommodate their dogs.

Chantelle Murray, founder and director at Paws R Us (SA) explained that in the original article, they referred to their struggle with hookworms on their site, which was one of the main reasons that prompted their decision to explore alternative premises. “However, for clarification’s sake, the hookworm issue only affected our section of the property on which we have open runs on sand. “It does not affect the rest of the property, and specifically, the [kennels] that are laid out in traditional format on a concrete floor.

“Our reality is, with all shelters in South Africa, a tough one. We are all struggling to stay afloat given the lack of government and corporate support for animal welfare, and a decrease in regular donations from the public, given the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Murray added that the thought of exploring alternative premises was always going to be a ‘long-shot’, but one that they wanted to undertake in weighing up whether they should stay open, or look toward a close-out strategy. She said the decision still hangs in the balance.

Nel said hookworms, like all other intestinal parasites, are very treatable. A good broad-spectrum dewormer for either dogs or cats will fix it.

She would like to apologise to the kennels’ landlady. “[The landlady] is a wonderful kind-hearted human. She has always been very good to us. She’s pro-animal welfare.”

Nel also apologised for any inconvenience or confusion her remarks might have caused.
