A high-speed chase that began in Midrand led to the arrest of three suspects in Kelvin near Sandton on October 7.

In a statement, Hawks spokesperson Captain Llyod Ramovha said the three suspects, aged 31, 37 and 39, had been wanted for more than a week.

He said, “The suspects have been on the Hawks’ radar and are said to be part of a syndicate that targets people withdrawing large amounts of money from banks and then follow the victims home or intercept the motorists along the way before robbing them.”

Two suspects were injured during the shoot-out with the Hawks’ Technical Operation Management Services while one surrendered unharmed. Officers were unharmed.

Two unlicensed firearms and a VW Golf that was allegedly used in the crime were recovered at the scene. The suspects are being charged with attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and are expected to appear in the Wynburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
