Learners give back to the community

WATERFALL – Camila Pretorius, high school academic head for Curro Waterfall said the community work helped the learners develop a sense of social awareness.

In a bid to help the underprivileged, Curro Waterfall Grade 10 and 11 learners committed to doing community service and donating food items to Kids Haven children’s centre on September 16.

Camilla Pretorius, operational head at Curro Waterfall High School, said learners took time between classes, extracurricular activities and other responsibilities to give back.

She added that the school encouraged its learners to make time to volunteer at various non-profit organisations and community projects.

That was how the initiative was started. “With the help of Kids Haven, two of our learners have completed more than 20 hours of community service,” she said.

“Asive Mdlankomo and McKaylin Reddy, both in Grade 11, handed over their donation. Through their service, these learners were given the opportunity to work with a variety of diverse people.”

She said this helped the learners develop a sense of social awareness as they learnt patience and empathy while seeing first-hand how they could have a positive impact on their local community.

Pretorius concluded that the school hoped their learners encouraged more teenagers to get involved in different projects to give back to the community.
