JRA to repair deteriorated road after complaints

GLEN AUSTIN – Kelebogile Mafa, media officer for the Johannesburg Roads Agency said there are plans to get a contractor to carry out the work.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has committed itself to repair Stag and Papillon roads in Glen Austin after multiple complaints by a resident.

A resident in Glen Austin had raised her concern over the badly deteriorated road infrastructure she was forced to use daily in the Midrand Reporter article Potholes Persist [Week ending September 17].

Adele Swanepoel said that Stag and Papillon roads, which pass by her property, have been in a bad condition for about three years and were getting worse by the day. She added that when it rains, it becomes hard for everyone using the roads to drive on them due to the accumulated debris in the potholes.

Swanepoel reported that their area was damaged by construction vehicles entering and exiting businesses. “I started with an application on my phone which did not work. I then contacted one of the ward councillors who reported the matter to the Johannesburg Roads Agency on Twitter and gave me a reference number #3916926. And this happened in April.”

JRA spokesperson, Kelebogile Mafa, said the road has badly deteriorated and plans around its repairs were still underway. She added that a team was scheduled to carry out repairs from September 8, 2021.

When the Midrand Reporter visited the site on September 14, there was no sign of construction or repairs on the road.

Mafa invited the Midrand Reporter to the area on September 21, where JRA engineers, in the presence of Mafa, explained that there were two Stag Roads that ran parallel. “The road in question is Stag and Papillon [next to a retailer warehouse] in Glen Austin, and is badly deteriorated, therefore, normal maintenance is not a viable solution.”

Mafa added, “The asphalt on Stag Road will be milled out and the road surface will be re-done. There are plans to get a contractor to carry out this work.”

She concluded that the section on Papillon was gravel and will therefore be graded.
