Food donor seeks help from community

MIDRAND – Local food donor has called on community members to assist her to reach more people by donating money or food.

Resident Asa Karriem has appealed to businesses and individuals in Midrand to assist her with donations so she can help more people who are less fortunate in the community.

Karriem has been donating food to domestic workers looking for jobs near local shopping complexes in Midrand since June this year.

On August 28, she donated 100 food parcels made up of sweet potatoes, carrots, cauliflower, cabbage, onions, maize, rice, samp, sausages, chicken and beef stew, and bread to the job seekers.

Karriem said any donations would be welcome including clothes, blankets, shoes, toys, vegetables, poultry, tin foods, maize, samp or any unwanted goods. “Money is most welcome. My other aim is to help the ladies [domestic workers] start generating money for themselves so they become self-employed,” she said.

“If companies can donate their sample, reject or out-of-season clothing, I can help these ladies to fix, wash, iron and clean it and they will be allocated bundles to sell in their areas to generate an income.”

Karriem suggested the women could even start a flea market. “We need to ‘upgrade’ our people to become good citizens and be proud of our country. Only the people of this land can – and should – make a difference.”

She concluded, “I see so much potential in the street, people I communicate with, and only a little motivation is what they need to start doing something.”
