Suspect finally arrested for culpable homicide of police officer

MIDRAND – The station commander welcomed the arrest and hoped for a conviction that will give the family justice for the death of their son.

A suspect was arrested on September 10 in connection with a culpable homicide incident on September 19 last year.

Midrand Police Station spokesperson Constable Eliot Mabulane said the station’s detective Sergeant Ouma Matlaila arrested the suspect in connection with the death of the late Constable Bafana William Nkhambule who was stationed in Sandton.

According to the police, the suspect allegedly knocked down the officer with his motor vehicle on the N1 north near the Allandale off-ramp and then failed to stop as required by the National Road Traffic Act, and fled the scene.

“The suspect also did not adhere to the 48-hour lapse rule, stating that one should present themselves to a police station if involved in a similar situation.

“Furthermore, a media statement was issued since April 8 this year by the office of the Midrand Police Station Commander Brigadier David Molefi Tsotsotso, pleading with community members to help trace the suspect for possible arrest,” he added.

Mabulane said Tsotsotso welcomed the arrest of the suspect.

He added that Tsotsotso hoped for a conviction that would give the family justice for the death of their son.

“The community still needs to know that the arm of the law is very long, despite the period in which the execution of an arrest or conviction might take.

“We continuously work toward improving this service and upholding the Constitution,” he said.

The suspect was expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to face charges of culpable homicide.
