Children learn to protect the Earth

MIDRAND – Miss Earth South Africa 2021 marked her pledge to the learners and the school to help as many people as possible to assist Mother Earth.

The ‘Green Queen’ paid a visit to the Blue Hills College and Preparatory on September 3 as part of her Arbor Week Celebrations.

Welcoming the start of spring, the newly announced Miss Earth South Africa 2021, Nompumeleo Maduna, the president of the Generation Earth Council Rachel Manyema and the director of the Miss Earth South Africa leadership programme Ella Bella Leite, all received a warm welcome by learners and staff.

Maduna explained the importance of making an awareness and celebrating nature in this manner, saying that everyone had a responsibility, to each other and to the planet, as they were planting the indigenous warburgia tree on the day.

She added that the tree marked her pledge to the learners, and as a school, she was committed to greening and educating as many people as possible to help Mother Earth. Maduna proceeded to plant two Azalea shrubs at the preparatory school with the younger generation of ‘Earth Warriors’.

Learners helped to plant the shrubs and committed to picking up the litter in the school while making sure the flowers and trees were watered every day.

Ella Bella Leite, director for the programme added, “Our new Miss Earth demonstrates clear leadership qualities, creative thinking, strength of the mind and a bubbly personality and we are thrilled to be announcing our new ambassador.

“Over a period of two decades, we can confidently say that we have added value, purpose and a knowledge base to a large group of our South African women that has helped move our environmental agenda forward.”

Blue Hills Prepartory School and College principal Bonginkosi Ndlhovu welcomed the team of nature activists, adding that he was quite happy with the tree-planting exercise.
