Suspects who attempted to hijack national traffic police officer are behind bars

MIDRAND – Two suspects were cornered and apprehended at Lever and Rooihuiskraal roads in Midrand.

Two suspects were arrested after allegedly attempting to hijack a National Traffic Police officer with unlicensed firearms on August 23.

According to Gauteng Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele, police arrested two suspects between the ages of 40 and 47 in the afternoon after they allegedly attempted to hijack a national traffic officer.

The officer, in uniform, was driving to work in his private vehicle next to the Sanral building.

Makhubele said the suspects, driving a blue Toyota Corolla, flashed their headlights towards the officer and drove towards him ‘with aggression’, until they realised their potential victim was a police officer.

They fled the scene and a chase ensued. Their vehicle was shot at by the traffic police official. “No injuries were reported. The Midrand Community Task Team, security and members of the Community Policing Forum responded quickly to the call for backup. The suspects were cornered and apprehended at Lever Road and Rooihuiskraal Road in Midrand,” he said.

Makhubele added that the suspects would be charged with attempted hijacking and possession of unlicensed firearms, and would appear at the Midrand Magistrates’ Court soon.
