Chef, lead mentor and co-founder of the Mothupa Foundation, Phathanani Mbatha said the foundation was established to assist youngsters by instilling confidence and hope in them. “The first time I came here and met the kids, I saw the state the house was in and the effort the house mother was putting in to make sure the kids were okay. I was touched.

He added, “One should remind themselves that if this woman was not around, it would not have been possible for these girls to survive.”

Pumla and Tankiso Lesofe (lawyer and speaker) support the mentor day hosted by the Mothupa Foundation.

Mbatha said that every year he came up with campaigns for that particular year. This year he focused on mentoring young girls through his mentor day. “I decided to come and have a mentor day and just talk to the girls, focusing on hope, confidence and career because at the moment the whole world was going through a difficult time.

“While many children were out there with both parents, yet were being stressed by everything to do with the pandemic, these kids here and the house mother were worried about where they would get the next sponsor and funding.”

Accelerit Technologies marketing representative, Tshepang Ralekgare said, “We had an opportunity to outsource the person who would put the gift bags together but, personally, I felt like I wanted to go through the process of putting these goody bags together and buying these things myself because that effort, that is what giving is about. I just wanted to make the children feel special.”

New Life Centre For Girls founder, Khopotso Nakin, said that she felt blessed seeing how the young girls’ day was made joyful. “The girls were really motivated, I was really touched to see one of our girls who is now doing well for herself show up and motivate the girls. “It made me feel good and realise that even if you did not have money, the little that you did for the children mattered.”
