Seven years in prison for housebreaking and robbery

A man was sentenced to seven years direct imprisonment on July 26 for committing housebreaking and robbery, and being in possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

The Midrand Police Station spokesperson, Constable Eliot Mabulane, said Simon Zwane went to a house in President Park and forcefully, with a firearm, held a family hostage in their house, depriving them of their property.

Mabulane explained that the male complainant and victim had arrived at his house and was met by the suspect who was armed with a firearm. Inside the house, there were two other suspects armed with a gun and a crowbar. “The suspects took the complainant’s television and cellphones and fled the house. The victim sought help where he fortunately met police from Ivory Park whom he told that he was hijacked. He traced his vehicle over the phone which led the police to the suspects’ whereabouts,” said Mabulane.

“On the arrival of the police, Zwane was apprehended alone as the other suspects had fled. He, the suspect, appeared at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court where he was sentenced to seven years direct imprisonment.”

The Midrand Police Station Commander, Brigadier David Tsotsotso applauded the members of the Ivory Park Police Station for their great work. He also applauded the Midrand police detective, Constable Phillipos Madimetja Madisha for speeding up the investigation which led to a conviction within a space of 12 days.

Mabulane said the swift approach his fellow members of the South African Police Service took would give the victim justice and freedom to trust the police.

He concluded that the Midrand Police remained patriotic towards its country, the mandate of the organisation and its principles in protecting those that are affected by crime. “We strive continuously to uphold the constitution, vision and mission of the South African Police Service to serve the community and make them safe at all times.”
