City debt rehabilitation programme extended

JOBURG – With effort from August 2, to September 30, all consumers who have not taken up or qualified for the debt rehabilitation programme will qualify for a reduced minimum down payment.

Following the impacts of the pandemic and recent incidents of looting, the City of Johannesburg has decided to extend further relief to all of its customers.

According to acting director of communications and stakeholder engagement for group finance, Selma Lloyd, these events came at a time when the city’s residents were already taking strain.

Following the successful debt rehabilitation programme which saw a number of qualifying households benefit, the City has made the decision to further extend the programme to all consumers, both business and households.

With effect from August 2 to September 30, all consumers who have not taken up or qualified for the debt rehabilitation programme will qualify for a reduced minimum down payment when entering into an agreement of debt arrangement.

“The City will, for the two month period, require only a 10% down payment towards a payment arrangement in order to assist struggling customers to bring outstanding accounts up to date.”

Lloyd added that this arrangement would make it easier for consumers to pay off their outstanding balance over a period that did not exceed 48 months, while avoiding credit control action and ensuring that there was no interruption in the supply of services.
