Police arrest suspects for possession of drugs and bribery

MIDRAND – Midrand Police Station Commander Brigadier David Tsotsotso said he hoped that a stringent message would be sent to the community that police did not promote corruption.

Midrand Police sector managers arrested two suspects on July 23.

One of the suspects was arrested for alleged possession of drugs and the other was arrested on charges of bribery.
According to Midrand Police Station spokesperson Constable Eliot Mabulane, the men were arrested on the corner of Market and South streets while the officers were on their daily patrol routine.

Mabulane said one of the suspects was stopped and searched while walking in the area which led to the police allegedly finding drugs in his possession. “The alleged drugs are due to be sent to the lab for examination while an investigation continues and the suspect will appear before the Midrand Magistrates’ Court to answer to all allegations laid against him,” Mabulane added.

He said officers arrested another suspect for breaking Covid-19 Level 4 national lockdown restrictions by allegedly being in possession of alcohol. “The suspect furthermore bribed the police officers with R1 000 and they warned him but he, however, insisted that they be bribed and he goes free.

“The two-sector managers, understanding the mandate of the South African Police Service and the rule of law, added another charge of bribery to the suspect and apprehended him. The suspect was arrested and detained at the Midrand Police Station where a docket was opened for an investigation.”

Midrand Police Station Commander Brigadier David Tsotsotso said he was appreciative of the officers who had shown dedication and respect for their job.
“This will send a stringent message to the public that the police do not promote corruption and that our members are patriotic with passion, and respect the badges on their chests,” Tsotsotso concluded.
