A Metro police officer was wounded when he and his colleague were shot at after trying to prevent a robbery at a petrol station on the N1 in Midrand on July 12.

According to Metro police spokesperson, Xolani Fihla the incident took place in the evening while the two police officers were on patrol on the N1 north and New Road.

He said the officers stopped at the filling station and while there a petrol attendant ran towards them to indicate that there was a robbery in progress.

“The officers attempted to take cover and avert the potential attack and that’s when an unknown [man] shot three rounds at the rear passenger window of the patrol vehicle and this led to one officer sustaining bleeding and minor bruises to his right shoulder,” he added.

Fihla said the officer was rushed to the nearest hospital in Midrand where he was treated and discharged the same day.

He concluded that Metro police wished the officer a speedy recovery and condemned any act of criminality and attacks on police officials.
