Local keeps it clean

MIDRAND – Noordwyk resident, Asa Karriem has raised concerns over the dumping people in her area did, which led to the place being unsafe and filthy.

A Noordwyk resident has taken it upon herself to help clean up her local park after noticing an increase in illegal dumping.

Asa Karriem has previously worked to fill up potholes on New Road in Midrand to prevent damage to vehicles.

The Midrand Reporter highlighted her efforts in A ‘hole’ lot of frustration [Week ending 21 May].

Karriem said she decided that she had had enough after seeing how dirty the open space between Acacia Street and Blombos Crescent, located near her house, was.

She was disappointed to see rubbish that had been dumped over the walls of homes. “In that rubble was condoms, certificates which I have got with three names of people as proof, baby clothes which they could have put on top of their dirt bin for people to take.”

Karriem added, “There were shoes, wine bottles, glass, I found all kinds of rubble, old food, it was horrible for me to work here but I did not mind because the place now looks nice.”

She added that the rubbish still needed to be removed.

Karriem pleaded with community members to be responsible and dispose of their waste responsibly.

Region A Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo manager, Joseph Ndou acknowledged there were some property owners who did not follow by-laws.

He said when they caught homeowners dumping rubbish illegally, City Parks would engage with them and give them seven days to remove the waste. “Failure to do so will lead us into involving the Environmental Health Department and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department.”

He added that all illegal dumping could be reported to City Parks.
