Residents encouraged to help out charities

WATERFALL – Three organisations were chosen by various SuperSPAR stores for their winter drive donations with the assistance of Ward 93 councillor Candice James.

Members of the public have been encouraged to donate non-perishable items until 20 June for a winter drive by SuperSPAR stores in Robindale, Olivedale and Polofields.

Ward 93 councillor Candice James is also involved in the project. She said she was approached by owner of the three SPARs, Magnus Loubser, for assistance,
“He approached as SPAR was wanting to do a winter drive and were not sure of the correct avenues to go through. I suggested each store choose a charity and we divide it up between the three organisations.”

The three organisations chosen by the various stores are Midrand SPCA, a day-care centre in Ivory Park, and the Midrand Association for the Physically Disabled.

Marketing manager of SuperSPAR Polofields, Kyla de Waal said, “I think the reception so far has been really good as we have already had items donated at the various [stores]. People are open to donate whatever they can, be it toys, blankets, cereal, canned food and many other items.
“Should people want to donate monetary funds, people can let us know where they want the money to go to or if they want to split the money donated to the organisations.”

Midrand Association for the Physically Disabled chairperson, Sydwell Ramakokovhu said he was approached by SPAR in regards to drive. He stated that their organisation is grateful for the donations in projects like these. “It’s really amazing to know that there are still people who are generous towards people like us in these trying times of a pandemic. We are so grateful for people who think of such to include disabled people,” he said.

“With the disabled people here, we do skills development, sports and recreation and a number of other things. We believe that being physically disabled, we should not be pitied but empowered.”

De Waal concluded that items donated will be distributed to the three organisations on 21 June.
