Recreation centre reaches phase two
KAALFONTEIN – Once completed, the Kaalfontein Multipurpose Centre development will consist of a new double-storey administration and office building, community hall, and sports facilities that include a gymnasium, pool, and library, offices, hall and soccer fields.
Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) announced on 19 April that the second phase of work on Kaalfontein Multipurpose Centre was underway.
Anthony Ngcezula, CEO of JDA said the modern and integrated multipurpose centre was for the residents of Kaalfontein, Ebony Park and Ivory Park.
Ngcezula said phase two of the project entailed the construction of the main building works and was expected to commence in the second quarter of this year. Ngcezula added that the project was estimated to take up to 24 months to reach completion.
“Once completed, the Kaalfontein Multipurpose Centre development will consist of a new double-storey administration and office building, community hall, and sport facilities that include a gymnasium, pool, library, offices, hall and soccer fields.
“The multipurpose centre will provide opportunities for social interaction and cater for different sporting codes such as soccer, basketball, swimming and more. From a learning perspective, the facility will offer learning facilitation through an 806m² state-of-the-art library and a learning centre,” added Ngcezula.
MMC for Community Development, Margaret Arnolds said the construction of the facility formed part of the City’s strategy to meet the demand for new social infrastructure and was intended to fulfil the broader regeneration objectives.
These objectives included transforming communities, skills growth, employment creation, improvement of quality of life and affording communities access to recreational spaces.
MMC for Development Planning, Thapelo Amad said Kaalfontein and surrounds remained an area where major backlogs were still a reality in terms of infrastructure. Amad added that the centre exemplified their key strategy in providing a basis for stimulating growth and development in the community.
Ngcezula concluded that the facility would supplement the various developments that had been taking place in Kaalfontein, including the Kaalfontein intersection upgrade and the recently upgraded state-of-the-art, eco-friendly Kaalfontein Clinic.
