Deppe concerned about crumbling roads

VORNA VALLEY – Deppe noted that there were cracks all over the road and was concerned since the road sees a lot of vehicles.

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe is displeased about the state of many roads in the suburbs which she oversees.

Anton Hartmann Street in Vorna Valley is a particular concern which she believes needs a complete resurfacing.

“The whole road is breaking up. The JRA has patched it up in various places but it is breaking. This whole road is in a state,” said Deppe.

She is concerned that cars may incur damage when driving through the street.

“It is in a desperate need of a resurface and yet the JRA has done nothing over time.”

Deppe noted that there were cracks all over the road and was concerned since the road sees a lot of vehicles.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) spokesperson Mosa Makhalima said, “The JRA continues to address the increasing number of road defects caused by various factors, including aging infrastructure and inclement weather conditions.

“[We are] currently repairing all road defects with potholes as the main priority. Where resurfacing cannot be done, the depot will keep fixing potholes as road maintenance until resurfacing is done.”

Another concern was what Deppe believed to be a dangerous pothole on the R55 outside Kyalami Estate.

“This is a very dangerous pothole. Cars race down this street at a great speed. If the road doesn’t get fixed soon, it is going to cause a huge problem for us.”

The R55 is a provincial road that does not fall under the jurisdiction of the JRA.

Chief roads superintendent at the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport Katleho Montshioagae said the team went to the site on 19 April and only identified one small pothole next to the estate, which they repaired.
