Lifeline is needed

GLEN AUSTIN – New Life Centre for Girls director, Khopotso Nakin said that it has taken the organisation three years to comply with the requirements of the Department of Social Development. Should we lose the house they would have to start afresh, all requirements included.

New Life Centre for Girls is still feeling the financial brunt months after Covid-19 lockdown regulations were relaxed.

The centre, based in Glen Austin, is appealing to local business and community members to assist them with donations as the centre faces the possibility of being shut down. For more than 10 years, the centre has been taking care of young girls from different backgrounds.

Founder and director of the centre, Khopotso Nakin said the owner of the house they had been renting had offered them the chance to buy the property or risk having to find another location.

She added that the centre’s biggest challenge was that they did not have the necessary funds to purchase the house. Nakin said a neighbour had put in an offer for the house and they could not compete with it.

Nakin added, “We request and plead with people and businesses to intervene and assist our centre so we can be able to buy the house.

“We have requested the owner to give us six months to fundraise, however, he wants a commitment from us which is why we need businesses and individual people of Midrand to come together and help us save our home.”

She said should they lose the house, some children would be stranded because they have nowhere to go. She added that this would be a major disruption as the children would also have to change schools.

“It has taken our organisation three years to comply with the requirements of the Department of Social Development.”

She concluded, “Should we lose the house we will have to start afresh, all the requirements included.”
