Three local environmental NPOs were recently recognised by Plastics SA for their persistent efforts to keep the environment clean.
The awards are named after Caroline Reid, an ocean conservation warrior from Durban who tragically passed away in 2018. Sixteen organisations were awarded the Caroline Reid Award in memory of her and in celebration of this year’s National Water Week which was from 15 to 22 March.
Diepsloot-based Cetric Foundation, Live Life Always and Action for Responsible Management of Our Rivers were among the organisations recognised for their hard work in keeping the community clean.
Online editor of Plastics SA, Dianne Blumberg said recipients of the awards were chosen from people and organisations who showed commitment to restoring the environment through various clean-ups while creating awareness of the effect of litter on the environment.
“This year, there were so many organisations and individuals doing absolutely amazing things during National Water Week, we simply had to acknowledge their efforts.
“There is no limit to how many people can be awarded a certificate in one year. We will probably hand out more during the course of 2021 at the places that these people are working in, for example, rivers, roadsides and so on,” she said.
Founder of Cetric Foundation, Cedric Mphofela said he was extremely grateful to receive the award that recognised his and his team’s hard work in the various community clean-ups hosted in various parts of Diepsloot, Fourways and even in Pretoria.
“I’m feeling so happy and blessed at how Dianne Blumberg surprised us for our hard work. My team and I keep pushing. I believed in them as they did in me as a director,” he said.
