Food is served at the Mpumelelo Soup Kitchen in Ivory Park

IVORY PARK – "We feed more than 200 kids a day and 100 adults every weekdays. We do receive donations from other organizations but due to the growing numbers everyday, at times we end up not having sufficient food to feed everyone," said Eva Rammutla.

Just in time for the Easter holidays, the Mpumelelo Soup Kitchen in Ivory Park handed over grocery hampers and gave children plates of warm food on 1 April.

The centre was founded in 2017 by Eva Rammutla and has kept many people’s stomachs full. Rammutla said the high level of unemployment and poverty in their community drove her to start this initiative to give out food hampers and feed children in the afternoon.

Rammutla runs the soup kitchen with the help of other women from the community. “We feed more than 200 kids and 100 adults every weekday. We do receive donations from other organisations but due to the growing numbers every day, at times we end up not having sufficient food to feed everyone,” she said.

She also assists children and adults by giving them sanitary towels. Rammutla has pleaded with other organisations in the area to donate perishable and non-perishable foods.

One of the women who benefited from the donations on 1 April, Thabisile Mabuza, said she was grateful to the soup kitchen. “The way they help us is hard to explain. Sometimes I would be stranded not knowing where my next meal would come from. Most of us have grandchildren we have to take care of because their mothers have left them with us. Now we have to take care of them, not knowing how we will do it,” Mabuza added.

Mabuza urged organisations that can assist the Mpumelelo Soup Kitchen, to help make a difference in their community.
