Local crime hotspots are exposed

MIDRAND – New Road, R55 and Summit Road Intersection, R55 and Tambotie Road Intersection, Tambotie and Garden Road Intersection and Lever Road identified as hijacking hotspots.


Midrand police along with the Community Policing Forum and the Sector 3 Crime Forum held a morning drive to inform motorists about crime hotspots.

The officers patrolled along various streets in Midrand on 4 March, which have become hijacking hot spots.

Marvin Maphiri, chairperson for the Sector 3 Crime Forum said they were able to distribute more than 300 pamphlets. He added that the campaign was aimed at alerting community members about crime hotspots, crime patterns and provide immediate contact details to be used if the need arose.

“Our community members are a bit ignorant or unaware of hotspots and as a result, many crime-related incidents occur while they are not aware,” he added.

Crime hotspots included New Road, R55 and Summit Road intersection, R55 and Tambotie Road intersection, Tambotie and Garden Road intersection and Lever Road.

He concluded by advising joggers not to jog alone at night as it could be dangerous.

Sergeant Thabiso Selowa, acting spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station, said the police joined the forum to conduct an awareness campaign addressing property-related crimes such as housebreaking, business break-ins, hijackings, theft of and out of motor vehicles by handing out pamphlets with safety tips.
