Rape accused is caught

IVORY PARK – Captain Bernard Matimulane, spokesperson for the Ivory Park Police Station said that the suspected rapist was expected to appear at the Tembisa Magistrate's Court on 17 March.

A man from Ivory Park was arrested on 16 March following the alleged rape of his fellow tenant’s 12-year-old daughter.

Captain Bernard Matimulane, spokesperson for the Ivory Park Police Station, said the man was arrested by detectives of the Ekurhuleni District’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Family Violence unit.

He added that the suspect and the parents of the victim were all tenants at the same property in Ivory Park’s Ext 8. “The suspect, 36 years old, is alleged to have on two occasions raped the victim while her mother was not around,” he said.

“This ordeal became too much for the little girl who informed her teacher at her school, who then informed a social worker.”

He added that the two professionals then brought the incidents to the mother’s attention.

Matimulane said the man would be charged with two counts of rape and was expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court soon.

The acting station commander of the Ivory Park Police Station, Colonel Baba Mpotoane, said he was saddened by this incident and called on parents to consider their children’s security whenever

they go out.

Mpotoane concluded, “For children to be less vulnerable to dangerous situations, they must not be left at home alone or elsewhere where they can become susceptible to any form of abuse, alcohol and drugs.”
