Major plans for Ward 80

RABIE RIDGE – Ward 80's Makgoba Pagadi said that there would soon be an introduction of the Vumalite fibre rollout in the ward.

Ward 80 councillor Makgoba Pagadi said there were a number of projects in the pipeline to improve service delivery across the ward.

Pagadi added that Kingfisher Street, Pelican Avenue, Freedom Drive, Stilt Avenue, Lerato Street and Church Street would be upgraded.

“There will soon be an introduction of the Vumalite fibre roll-out in the ward that will need brigades [community members] from the ward to educate the community about the fibre and explain to small to medium enterprises how they can get involved in the project.

“The Kanana Sports Ground project is still awaiting an insurance report to assess the damage done to it after it was vandalised.”

He said the Rabie Ridge Community Hall would also be upgraded and a new roof would be installed. In due time, the Department of Community Development will introduce the contractor who will be overseeing the project to the community. This will allow for small businesses and labourers from the community to offer their services.

Pagadi added that because schools have now reopened, City Parks would cut the grass outside the schools in Ward 80.

There were also plans to build 10 classrooms at Allanridge Combined School. Pagadi explained that these classrooms were being built to accommodate learners who had attended illegal private schools which were shut down last year in Ivory Park by the Gauteng Department of Education. The Midrand Reporter reported on these closures in Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi shuts down two schools in Midrand [published online on 15 October 2020].

Pagadi said streetlights on Stilt Avenue were going to be repaired and needed new cabling. “In the meantime, Johannesburg City Power and Johannesburg Roads Agency are in talks to avoid future vandalism or theft of cables.”

He added that Johannesburg Water would upgrade the sewer systems in the area and projects to supply electricity were awaiting budget approval by the City council.

“Pikitup has issued 240-litre bins in Rabie Ridge and community members who did not receive theirs should log a call and get a reference so it gets delivered.”

Pagadi made it clear that all people who would work on these community projects would be sourced locally through the labour desk headed by the ward committee members.
