Letter from the editor: We have garnered important lessons from a difficult year

As we head toward the end of what, I think most people will agree, has been a crazy year, I think it's important to reflect on the lessons we have garnered from it.

As we head toward the end of what, I think most people will agree, has been a crazy year, I think it’s important to reflect on the lessons we have garnered from it.

The lockdown brought up challenges people had never imagined, the Midrand Reporter team included. As essential workers, we were still able to go out and report on stories, although in much stranger circumstances than we are used to.

Our teams battled newfound challenges, such as shouting from a couple of metres away to interview community members, coordinating photographs with people spread out and attempting to show expressions behind masks, and carrying a folder filled with documents to prove we have the right to carry out our jobs. Despite this, their commitment to providing relevant community news for our readers prevailed.

From this period, we have learned the importance of providing accurate and relevant information, highlighting the good and the bad within our communities and how to navigate often tricky situations.

I feel confident that these are lessons that will remain with us always but I certainly hope next year will be a bit less stressful than 2020.
