Community unites to bring change at Midrand Primary School

MIDRAND – The Midrand Primary School's call for a need of sanitary pads for learners got answered by the South African Local Government Association and Liberty.

The Midrand Primary School received a pleasant visit from Liberty and the South African Local Government Association (Salga) on 25 November.

The school received donations of 157 boxes of sanitary pads from Liberty to give to learners who need them.

This after a concerned resident Nozuko Yawa approached Salga who then contacted Liberty and secured the sanitary pads donations for the school.

Yawa explained that when she was approached by the school’s principal, saying that they have a challenge, she was motivated to look for a donor.

“After donating before, I decided not to make this a once-off thing, instead, do it continuously. Fortunately, these sanitary pads will last for some time, which will give me time to collect and donate to other schools.”

Ayanda Dlamini from Liberty said that the supplier decided to jump in and also give them 150 books which would go with the sanitary pads. “The books are about love and in my opinion are for the young children to understand the passion of love at a young age, not romantically, but being able to express and receive love.

“This is a very sensitive matter and I think as a woman it becomes a very difficult challenge to go through. If you do not have the necessary tools to take care of yourself it becomes hard to prosper, and be at your best because this is something that happens on a monthly basis.”

Andile Nqini from Salga said they view schools as one of the engines that breed leadership in communities. “When we heard the request we immediately contacted one of our partners, Liberty, who came to answer this call to bring dignity to the young ones. We still make that call to the government – they should make that shift and make sure these dignitary pads become mandatory or get to be given freely to children, especially those who are disadvantaged.”

Midrand Primary School principal Kwena Kgaabi expressed gratitude after receiving the pads along with staff members on behalf of the learners. “I believe that now each learner will receive a pack of sanitary pads each month which guarantees our learners that whatever challenges they will have with monthly cycles at school or at home they will always be provided for.”

Kgaabi concluded that this was a step in the right direction and wishes the same will happen at other schools.
