Ivory Park police warn residents to not take the law into their own hands’

MIDRAND– The Ivory Park Police Station is appealing to community members who have information on the mob justice incident to help with the investigations.

Two men in their late 20s were beaten to death on 12 November after they were allegedly found in possession of stolen gas cylinders in Ivory Park.

According to Ivory Park Police Station spokesperson, Captain Bernard Matimulane, police were called to a scene in Tswelopele in Ivory Park in the morning and found the two men beaten to death allegedly by a mob of community members.

“The stolen gas cylinders were stolen at a spaza shop in the area… What we know for now is that the shop owner learned that his spaza shop was broken into, and gas cylinders were stolen.

“We also know that he learnt, and we do not know from who, that his gas cylinders were found in possession of some people in another area of Tswelopele. He went to out to identify the cylinders thus confirming that they were his.”

Station commander Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, condemned the senseless killings. “I appeal to the community to work with the police rather than resorting to taking the law into their own hands,” Ngcobo urged.

Matimulane added that any other information would hopefully be revealed by the investigation. “Investigations will hopefully reveal who did what and how. All experts were called to the scene.

“The station commander is appealing to anyone with information regarding these murders to notify the police. Information provided will be treated confidentially.”
