Community members clean Jukskei despite rain

ONEHILL – Over 300 members of the community braced the rain to clean up the Jukskei River with more than 200 bags of litter collected.

The rain on 21 November did not stop community members from the Lonehill and Glenferness areas to come and assist with the clean-up of the Jukskei River.

The clean-up was organised by Live Life Always (LLA), Action for Responsible Management of Our Rivers (Armour), the Greater Kyalami Conservancy (Gekco), and the Cetric Foundation based in Diepsloot. Ward 94 councillor David Foley, along with Pikitup, also offered their assistance.

Almost 300 members of the community gathered with plastic bags and wellington boots for some hard labour, thankful for the cloudy weather.

Foley said he was impressed at the turnout. “Seeing how many people have come in the weather is amazing to see, even in the rain. We’ve also assisted in getting Pikitup to collect the bags from Gracepoint Church in Glenferness and near Crawford International Lonehill,” he said.

Mark McClue from Armour said the clean-up forms part of their project to educate the community with responsible waste management, but to also keep the community clean.

Founding member of the Cetric Foundation, Cedric Mphofela said the foundation has also helped to clean up different areas in Fourways in the past week of 16 November. “We started on Corner of Main and Witkoppen, also to Fourways Crossing and have collected over 3 000 bags. It is something we have been doing as a two-week project, so we are satisfied with the results,” he said.

“I think today was a good day with the clean-up. We were honestly not expecting people to come in their numbers with the places we advertised the clean-up. I think we really did try our level best.”
