Midrand police call for increased vigilance following spate of hijacking

MIDRAND – The Midrand police are calling on the community to remain vigilant following a spike in hijackings.

Police are urging the local community to be vigilant following a spate of hijacking in the area.

Spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station Sergeant Matome Tlamela said that there have been an increase in hijacking in areas such as Olifantsfontein, Vorna Valley and Blue Hills.

She said the reports indicate that a White Volkswagen Polo approaches motorists with blue lights pretending to be the police. The vehicle would reportedly stop the motorist and hijack them, some of the incidents involved robbery.

Tlamela added, “We want the community to remain vigilant. If you are approached by this vehicle or any suspicious unmarked vehicle claiming to be police, drive immediately to the nearest garage or police station. If they are police, you can address them on the issue at the station.”

Suspicious activity can be reported to 011 347 1600.
