Midrand SPCA raids chicken selling site

MIDRAND – The Midrand SPCA, police and Metro police partnered to raid a Midrand-based chicken selling site while educating the hawkers.

Midrand SPCA teamed up with Metro police and local police officers to raid a chicken selling operation in the area on 11 October.

General manager of the animal organisation, Pam Pretorius, said they had worked closely with law enforcement to inspect and confiscate chickens at the site, and that the organisation visited various sites regularly.

She added, “Hawkers need to have a licence to operate. They didn’t but we were also shocked about the conditions that many of the chickens were kept in. They didn’t have water, and they were in the scorching sun, extremely overcrowded cages hanging upside down. We loaded up our vehicle and the Metro police vehicle with all the chickens, and the relevant fines were handed out while the members of the Midrand SPCA attempted to educate the hawkers on the issue.”

Pretorius thanked the Metro police and police for their assistance and called on the community to report any illegal selling of animals to the relevant law enforcement agencies and Midrand SPCA.
