Crowthorne resident worried about non-functioning street lights

CROWTHORNE – The intersection on R55 and Main Road is notorious for accidents said resident Andrew Hoskings.

A Crowthorne resident has shared his concerns about street lights which are not functioning in the area.

Andrew Hosking highlighted the downsides caused by the non-functioning lights on Whisken Avenue and Ethel Street in Crowthorne after multiple accidents have occurred. Hosking explained to the Midrand Reporter that the entire Ethel Street and a small section of Whisken Avenue had new street lights installed approximately two years ago as part of the new road upgrade that was completed, linking Whisken Avenue to the R55.

“The entire street of lights stopped working at the beginning of this year, prior to lockdown, and the lights are still out. The intersection of the R55 and Main Road is notorious for accidents as these are two very busy roads and the R55 has been widened at this intersection. Hosking said he has reported the problem to City Power on multiple occasions.

“They contacted me when they were on site approximately four weeks ago and I showed them personally where the junction boxes are, however, since then the lights are still out of order. “I then received a call a week later stating that these lights are not their responsibility and I am to contact Eskom.”

Ward 132 councilor Annette Deppe also tried to assist. “It is not my role as a local councilor to see to quality control on a provincial road. But if anyone has sent me a query it has been forwarded to the provincial planner on this project for remediation. Because that road is very dark and it is dangerous for motorists and pedestrians with no street lights.”

Spokesperson for City Power, Isaac Mangena confirmed that the lights were the responsibility of City Power, adding that they installed the street lights as part of their programme to ensure every dark corner of the city is lit for the safety of pedestrians and cars. “The project is being finalised with the hand over to the maintenance team still to be done. We were also finalising an agreement with Eskom for a power connection point for the same lights,” said Mangena.

Mangena said that he was not able to confirm when the lights would be working again but everything ‘should be finalised in the coming weeks and the lights will be switched on’.
