Armed robber sentenced to 15 years’ direct imprisonment

MIDRAND – A man was sentenced to 15 years for an armed robbery committed last year.

Midrand police are pleased that a man accused of committing armed robbery last year has been sentenced.

Spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station Sergeant Matome Tlamela said that Letsoalo Hezekiel Setebe was sentenced to 15 years’ direct imprisonment after robbing two victims on 14 June last year.

Setebe robbed the victims while he was working as a driver for a ride-sharing service. Tlamela said Setebe gave a lift to the victims who were on their way to Tembisa.

She added that as they entered the car there was an accomplice who pointed a firearm at them and demanded their handbags before ordering them to leave the car. The victims reported the incident to the Midrand police who immediately launched an investigation.

Soon the police crime prevention team led by Captain Vus’muzi Mngoma spotted the suspect’s vehicle on Lever Road in Noordwyk and arrested the driver. Through the investigation, Sergeant Ronny Mkhari managed to check the tracker of the vehicle and linked Setebe to the crimes committed.

He was sentenced to 15 years’ direct imprisonment for armed robbery. Details: Midrand Police Station 011 347 1600.
