Rabie Ridge police warn of internet scammers

RABIE RIDGE – Man scammed after purchasing a video console online.

Rabie Ridge police urge the community to be aware of scams after three residents fell victim to alleged scammers on the Internet.

According to the spokesperson, Constable Jacob Nhlongo, on 25 September a complainant from Friendship Town alleged that he was scammed of his money. “The victim explained that they saw an advert about a popular video game console listed on an online store application. He then purchased the console by transferring money to the account holder,” Nhlongo said.

“The item purchased was never delivered and when he tried to follow it up with customer service they alleged that the sale was a scam.”

In another incident, a male complainant from Klipfontein View alleged that he saw cattle heads for sale on the Internet. Upon purchasing them after transferring the required amount on 17 September, he tried following up with the sellers but they never delivered.

“He tried to communicate with them on 18 September and they promised to deliver. The same day when he called them his phone call was not going through as they had already blocked his number.”

In the last case of fraud reported, Nhlongo explained that a female complainant from Kanana transferred money to an investment company after she saw an advert on social media which claimed that they could multiply money.

“The complainant transferred money on 27 September. After she transferred the money the suspects kept on pushing the victim to transfer more money. That was when she suspected that she had been scammed.”

Nhlongo said that the company is untraceable. He urged community members to be very careful when buying and investing online.
