JRA host blitz for region A

MIDRAND – The Johannesburg Roads Agency hosted an event to celebrate the seventh week of their service delivery blitz.

The Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) hosted a service delivery blitz with Transport MMC Nonhlanhla Makhuba and local councillors on 9 October.

The event saw the MMC and various stakeholders introducing an escalation of service delivery in Region A and JRA activities by adding road markings to the road, weeding the storm water drains and reinstating the roads in the area. The event also formed part of a number of Transport Month activities to be announced by the City of Johannesburg. The service delivery blitz had entered its seventh week and has seen the agency fix a number of road defects accumulated during levels 5 to 3 of the national lockdown.

Chairperson of the JRA board Dr Albert Mokoena said that the entity had seen a reduction in their workforce at the Region A depot with only four teams instead of nine. He added that the biggest challenge for the JRA is the ageing infrastructure in the various area that they need to tackle. He said that the entity has also identified a number of hotspots across the city, including Diepsloot, Kaalfontein and Ivory Park.

Ward 112 councillor Lerato Mphefo said, “We are glad that they are here. Myself and my colleagues did oversight at the depot because everything was not being done at the time.” She added, “I’m also glad that they acknowledged the lack of teams and the problems at the asphalt plant, which has been an issue leading to no potholes being fixed. I’m happy that the entity is here and are willing to address the issues that we brought up during our oversight.”

MMC for Transport Nonhlanhla Makhuba said, “Before we went to lockdown we had a lot of the problems on the road. And when lockdown started we couldn’t do all our work… The JRA was not classified as essential work so we couldn’t do anything until Level 2. “I am going to every single region to launch this programme and make sure that all the work carries on.”

She concluded, “The City of Johannesburg is rapidly growing as is it known to be an economic hub. It is therefore imperative that we continuously work towards improving our road infrastructure to ensure mobility, accessibility and the safety of communities.”
