Learners embrace their different cultures

MIDRAND – Blue Hills College hosted an event to celebrate their culture.

Blue Hills College held a cultural day event on 25 September in commemoration of Heritage Day.

They took up President Cyril Ramaphosa’s challenge and participated in the Jerusalema dance challenge. The learners came to school with their traditional clothing and any item which represented their culture as a fun way of representing their cultures.

Ben Mwamba the head of extracurricular activities at the school said, “We wanted to show the whole world including Master KG himself that Blue Hills College is doing the Jerusalema Challenge, then after this, we will get into our cultural attires to celebrate our cultures.

“Today we are celebrating culture, we are also saying to the world that while we are celebrating our culture, we are also celebrating one of our local artists because what Master KG did is something that really brings out our excellence as Africans.”

Thando Tshabalala, head girl at Blue Hills College, said that they would celebrate their heritage every day. “We, therefore, have a platooning system, we celebrated on 23 September and today. It is basically to showcase and embrace who we are as South Africans and Africans in general.

“I fully understand why the president was pushing that we do the dance as South Africans, the rest of the world is commemorating the dance. I fully understand the bringing together and the unity that is portrayed is carried out by our rainbow nation.”

Tshabalala concluded, “Just the dance does not change the reality of the things that are happening, but nonetheless the smallest things like dancing together to bring people together is good especially because we are celebrating culture and we are such a diverse country. “We are able to incorporate all traditions, unlike having people do things separately.”
