Victims receive care packages from Victim Empowerment Centre

MIDRAND – Midrand Victim Empowerment receives donations to help victims in their journey of healing.

BMW Group South Africa donated handbags filled with essential items to the Midrand Victim Empowerment Centre. As part of a Women’s Month initiative led by BMW Group South Africa and Lions Club of Midrand, the Midrand Victim Empowerment Centre welcomed the comforting gifts to give to women who would come in as a result of gender-based violence or other cases. The donation took place on 17 September at the Midrand Police Station, where the Victim Empowerment Centre is based. Midrand VEC acting chairperson, Jacqui von Loggerenberg who received the bags along with her team, explained that the bags won’t necessarily end the victim’s pain, but it will make the process of recovery easier. She said, “The bag comes in the form of a care package, with all essential items and more to make the victims feel better and a note of inspiration to show that somebody cares.” Sibusiso Mkwanazi, group communications at BMW Group SA, said that they decided to support women during Women’s Month by requesting their employees to donate handbags. “Handbags are one of those items that every lady needs. In addition, we asked that the bags be filled with necessities such as sanitary products, hand sanitiser and hand cream. These contributions are to be used to uplift the lives of South Africa’s underprivileged women,” said Mkwanazi. “In terms of gender-based violence, BMW Group South Africa is constantly seeking the end of impunity for perpetrators, and to strive to create private and public safe spaces for women and children.” In conclusion, Mkwanazi added that as their headquarters are in Midrand, they are an integral part of the community. It is this sense of community that continues to drive their efforts to uplift the communities they are based in. “The handbag initiative is part of BMW South Africa’s ongoing commitment to uplifting the lives of South Africa’s women.” Von Loggrenberg thanked the Lions Club for their continued support.
