Rabie Ridge Police tackle gender-based violence

GBV RABIE RIDGE – Rabie Ridge Police Station launches Gender-Based Violence Brigades.

In an effort to fight gender-based violence, the Rabie Ridge Police Station with the help of the Gauteng Community Safety MEC, Faith Mazibuko and Ivory Park Police Station head Brigadier David Ngcobo, held a GBV awareness campaign on 2 September in Rabie Ridge.

According to the station spokesperson, Constable Jacob Nhlongo, together with the community members of Rabie Ridge, women and men as safety promoters, they gathered at the Rabie Ridge Community Hall to launch the Gender-Based Violence Brigade.

“The purpose of the programme is to visit families in order to encourage women and children to break their silence when it comes to issues related to gender-based violence to ensure that we reduce it to a minimum in Rabie Ridge and Ivory Park communities. We also refer the victims to Victim Empowerment Centre’s as a means of offering help,” said Nhlongo.

He encouraged the police to arrest the perpetrators and not to victimise the victims by asking them difficult questions when they want to report cases of such nature. “I would also like to encourage men to join the programme to create safety place for the victims too.”

Mazibuko shared the gender-based violence statistics from April until June this year. After the event, they conducted door-to-door meetings with community members and police to encourage community members to report gender-based violence cases.
