Barbeque Downs opens Eco-Park with tree planting

BARBEQUE DOWNS – The Barbeque Downs Residents Association hosted a special tree planting to celebrate the opening of their Eco-Park.

Barbeque Downs Residents Association got together to host a special planting of trees donated by Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo on 1 September.

The chairperson of the association, Samantha Cholewka, said the trees were to be planted in the Eco-Park in the suburb, which had been closed to the public and undergoing rehabilitation. The association has already developed a dog park and children’s park which opened two years ago.

“We want to create an environment where parents can bring their children and look at the wildlife and trees,” she added.

Cholewka said the association had been planning to include walkways and benches with assistance from the local community.

The association collaborated with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo who donated 30 trees, including fruit trees and acacias which were planted in the park.

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe, who attended the planting, said she found it tremendous to see a community project that the Barbeque Downs residents had taken on and was thrilled to see them work alongside Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo to make their community better with a great park.

Region A manager Joseph Ndou said, ” I think the main purpose of City Parks is to work with the community and to ensure that the community takes ownership of the trees in their area. When we deal with the community in this way, we are saying that it is possible for the City to work with the community and to assist in the quality of life.”
