Special donation helps out Glen Austin residents

GLEN AUSTIN – The local community in Glen Austin gathered for a food donation organised by Geoffrey Sutherns Attorneys, Food for Life and Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe.

Some residents of Glen Austin were given a special food donation organised through a community partnership on 22 August.

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe said, “We did a hand out of food parcels just outside the Midrand SPCA to about 150 people.”

The parcels were put together with the assistance of Geoffrey Sutherns Attorneys who gave a monetary donation. Food for Life’s Randburg branch assisted with putting together the food parcels and a small care package for children which included a packet of chips, sweets, soup and tins of beans among other things.

Deppe said the donation was a continuation of help provided by residents and businesses over the past three months during lockdown. “I started to do this work as a humanitarian more than a councillor.
“We received so many calls from residents who were hungry or out of work… We also found out that many of the people were not registered with the Department of Social Development due to the fact that they don’t have smartphones or access to technology, so over the past few months we’ve added some of these people to their database.
“I think this initiative has been absolutely fantastic and I’m so proud to see the residents and businesses of Ward 132 come out and show their generosity and kindness. I’ve been humbled by this experience.”
