EFF members mobilise outside Clicks store in Midrand

MIDRAND – A group of EFF members gathered outside a Clicks store to protest the use of an offensive advert on the store's website.

Members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) gathered outside the Clicks store at the Mall of Africa on 7 September to protest the release of an offensive advert by the store.

Social media users shared their outrage over the advert on 4 September, which labelled black women’s hair as dry, frizzy and damaged while a white woman’s hair was labelled as normal.

In a statement, Clicks said, “We have made a mistake and sincerely apologise for letting you down. We recognise we have a role to play in creating a more diverse and inclusive SA, starting with our website content. We know we need to do better, and commit to ensuring our content better reflects this value.”

The EFF condemned the advert and called on its members to shut down all Clicks stores around the country.

The Midrand Reporter journalist Sarah Koning is reporting from the store. According to Koning, members of the EFF removed locks from the door which was then blocked by members of the police.

At the time of publishing, the store remained closed.
