Midrand police officers raise awareness about GBV

MIDRAND – Local police held a parade at local shopping centres to raise awareness about gender-based violence and educate the public.

Members of the Midrand police stood up to gender-based violence through an educational campaign at local shopping centres and public spaces on 21 August.

Spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station Sergeant Matome Tlamela said police were joined by local security companies during their parade. The event was organised by Operational Commander Captain Thapelo Molepo and Tlamela.

Tlamela said the aim of the was to create awareness among community members about gender-based violence and how law enforcement officials would react to the perpetration of such crimes.

Constable Tshwarelo Eliot Mabulane spoke on a loudspeaker at the event, encouraging community members to raise their hands and say ‘not in my name.’ He also urged victims of gender-based violence to report abuse to police.

Tlamela said about 1 000 pamphlets containing safety tips were distributed in public areas around Midrand.
including The Boulders Shopping Centre, Sandridge Shopping Centre, Noordwyk SPAR and Blue Hills Shopping Centre.
