ICYMI: Young Kyalami resident raises R19 300 for Kitty and Puppy Haven

KYALAMI – Luke Calvert shaved his head and donated R200 of his pocket money to Kitty and Puppy Haven.

Young Kyalami resident Luke Calvert has helped raise R19 300 to support Kitty and Puppy Haven during Covid-19.

The 10-year-old, who is in Grade 4 at St Stithians Boys’ Preparatory, was inspired by Lonehill resident Ryan Parish to shave his head and donate his pocket money to a charity in need.

He learned about the work of Kitty and Puppy Haven, located in President Park, through his parents.

“At first, I didn’t want to shave my hair. But my mom told me that they couldn’t feed the dogs at Kitty and Puppy Haven and I wanted to make sure that the dogs could get food,” said Luke.

Luke began by donating R200 from his pocket money and posting a video on Facebook appealing to the public to donate to the cause.

Within five days, he had raised a total of R19 300.

Luke’s mom Jodi said, “I feel emotional thinking of what Luke has managed to do. He is a very kind young man. He believes he is here to make a difference and I am incredibly proud of him. Seeing this amount of money raised has spurred him on to continue this sort of work in the future.”

Founder and director of Kitty and Puppy Haven Samantha Berger reacted on Facebook saying, “Luke, you are so special. You have brought me to tears. Your parents must be so proud of what an incredibly compassionate child they have raised. All I can say is thank you, which sounds so little, but may you be blessed in any and all things you do.”

Berger said the funds raised would be used to pay for food, medication, vet’s bills, electricity, water and salaries at Kitty and Puppy Haven.
