Christ Church College head girl shares her lockdown learning experiences

During this trying time, one thing I thank God for regularly are my teachers. Being in matric is not easy. I feel as though I always have something to worry about. From my massive workload, many projects, worries about university acceptance and just general concerns about my future, I have a lot on my plate. Now in the light of the pandemic things have not become easier. In fact, I would say our lives, as students, has become more stressful. But luckily for myself and my peers, our teachers have made our schooling a lot easier.

My teachers have been so understanding and supportive during this taxing time with their regular messages asking us how we’re coping, their offers of support and well wishes which have meant a lot to me. While they do give us work that keeps us busy, they don’t overwork us and for that, I am greatly thankful. While my grade disagrees on many things, one thing that we can definitely agree on is our teachers’ compassion and empathy for us. We can all feel this through our various screens. I’m also thankful for the lessons they give us when we inform them that we are falling behind, the kind words, the emails and messages reminding us that they are praying and thinking of us, the little games that provide fun distractions from our repetitive days. Before this year I never used to understand why old matriculants would often come back to school to pay the teachers a visit, but now I see why. In fact, looking ahead, I don’t know how I am going to leave a place or the people who have made me feel at home since I have known them when this year comes to an end.
