Kitty and Puppy Haven in President Park appeals to the public to support their work during this difficult lockdown period.
Owner and founder of the shelter Samantha Berger said that at present, they are in crisis mode.
“With national lockdown, our sanctuary is closed. We have had to move 14 members of staff onto the property, both to care for our animals and for their own safety. We are housing and feeding them and doing everything possible to ensure their comfort during this time,” said Berger.
She said the shelter’s operating costs have risen but they have absolutely no income.
“We still have to pay salaries, rates, water and electricity, provide food for our animals and staff and pay for veterinary visits and care. Our operating costs are over R250 000 per month. We are unable to conduct fundraisers, receive physical donations, operate our shop or process any adoptions.”
Berger said that many have questioned their decision not to foster out their animal during this period. Berger said that there was great concern about who would look after the animal if the carer got sick and who would pay for veterinary care. Another concern was the struggle that the animal may experience if they are fostered and lavished with love in a home environment and then have to return to a shelter.
“Everything we do and every decision we take is in the best interest of the babies in our care,” said Berger.
She said that the situation is dire and she appeals to the public to donate money to support Kitty and Puppy Haven, no matter how big or small the donation.
“Anything will help and will be so greatly appreciated… Please don’t let the virus claim Kitty and Puppy Haven as a victim.”
