The six safest setting styles for small diamonds

Every piece of jewellery tells its own unique story.

  1. PAVÉ BAND:

This refers to small diamonds laid into the metal in a single continuous row.  They are held in by tiny metal beads. It is advisable to ask for four beads per small stone as opposed to a shared bed per two stones.  If done properly this would last a lifetime.  This is a low-profile design that lies close to the hand and minimises the appearance of metal from the side. Pavé setting adds extra sparkle to an engagement ring, and will emphasize the beauty of the center diamond.  These settings are available in a wide range of styles, from modern settings; vintage styles to practical every day bands.

  1. PRONG SET:

A wedding band that features taller prongs holding each of the diamonds individually. This type of design comes in a few variations, but the main idea is that the diamond stands out above the base of the band as opposed to pavé where it is set into the band itself.  This also allows you to see more of the profile of each diamond and is usually reserved for larger sized diamonds of 0.05 carats and upwards.

  1. U-SHAPE:

A U or V shaped prong holds each diamond into place and the entire profile of the diamond is visible from all angles with the extra basket support.  This is a type of shared prong setting and can be done with varying sizes and types of stones usually starting at around 0.03 carats or larger.

  1. BEZEL SETTING:

Each diamond on the band is held in by a rim of metal depending on the shape you are going for.  This is more of a vintage look and will usually feature hand etched milgraining/beading to add to the retro appeal.  These come in many variations of bezel shapes with the most common being a round bezel for a round stone.  Alternating round diamonds and marquise diamonds have become popular in rose gold bezel settings.

How to choose the perfect wedding ring

  1. CHANNEL SET BAND:

In this type of wedding band, the diamonds of the band are held in by the walls of metal on each side.  There are no prongs holding the stones.  The diamonds literally lie in a channel. This is a very safe setting style, as the diamonds are protected from bumps and knocks by the metal walls.  The best feature about a channel band is that you are not limited to the size of diamond.  All small diamonds work in channel bands.

  1. BURNISHED SET:

These types of bands will feature diamonds that are set into the surface of the band itself without any prongs or bezel holding it.  For wedding bands, you will usually see them as being a collection of 5 to 10 stones evenly spaced across the surface of a plain comfort fit band.  They are also sometimes “scattered” around the band to create a unique look and can also be done in different sizes of small diamonds.
