Help Society for Animals in Distress feed those in need during lockdown

VORNA VALLEY – The Society for Animals in Distress encourages residents to support them as they seek to help impoverished people and their animals during lockdown.

The Society for Animals in Distress (Said) is appealing to community members to share in the spirit of ubuntu by assisting them in caring for those in need and their animals in the communities of Diepsloot, Olievenhoutbosch, Tembisa and Ivory Park during lockdown.

The society is an established veterinary service provider that has been serving South Africa’s rural and impoverished population for 62 years.

Members of the public are urged to either donate financially or in the form of food for people and animals.

Executive general manager at the society Heather Robertson said, “The society is instrumental in driving veterinary access to vulnerable communities, as such the impact of poverty levels on communities and their animals is serious and escalating. The society is a vital cog in the delivery of relief and care for people and animals.

“The delivery of dog and human food will allow us to ensure that the poorest of the poor receive this care on their doorsteps.”

Outreach manager Marizda Kruger said that all donations would be given to responsible owners known by the society.

Kruger said, “Everybody is taking strain. Even the most caring and loving people are unable to take care of their dogs as they are no longer receiving an income.”

Robertson explained, “As the economy falls to levels that we as a country have never seen, the society itself requires the support and care of the public. I, therefore, pray that our services and the integrity that we are respected for will assist donors in their endeavour to make life-saving impacts at this time. We would be honoured to be their feet and hands.”

Those who wish to contribute to the cause can email srequine@animalsindistress.org.za or message their name, delivery time and size of delivery to Dennis Bodington on 081 013 3394 before arranging their delivery at the society, located at 20 Moerdyk Street, Vorna Valley (delivery gate is across the road from the Swiss Club).
