Midrand community members help police make arrest

HALFWAY HOUSE – The Midrand police, with the help of the community, arrested a cell phone thief.


Officers from the Midrand Police Station have arrested a suspect allegedly involved in a robbery at a local shopping centre.

The incident occurred on 19 March at 5.45pm. Spokesperson Sergeant Matome Tlamela said that the complainant was sitting on a bench near the shopping centre in Halfway House waiting for transport after work.

She added that the victim was with a friend when the suspect approached them. The suspect allegedly put his hand over the complainant’s mouth and demanded her cell phone before turning to the complainant’s friend to take her phone.

The complainant screamed for help and the suspect fled the scene before he could take the second phone.

Tlamela said that the suspect ran and was chased by community members who were alerted. As he was chased to Alexandra Road, he was stopped by patrolling police officers and searched. The police discovered the cell phone and a knife on the suspect.

The suspect was detained at the station and charged with common robbery.
