Covid-19: Over 500 post offices remain open during lockdown

Certain post offices will remain open to provide essential services such as Sassa payments and to deliver medication.

During the 21-day national lockdown, certain post offices around the country will be open to render essential services.

According to a statement by the South African Post Office, more than 500 branches will remain open during the lockdown, however, some branches have closed from 6 April.

The statement said that in terms of the emergency announcement, the South African Post Office is allowed to conduct certain financial transactions, such as payment of Sassa grants, and to deliver medication during the lockdown period as these are defined as essential services.

All branches of the South African Post Office were open during the initial payment period of Sassa grants on 30 and 31 March. Those that now remain open are those that are deemed essential.

Other services, such as the payment for the delivery of parcels and the payment of motor vehicle licences, will only be resumed immediately once the lockdown period is over.

Ivumile Nongogo, the acting CEO of the SA Post Office said, “The SA Post Office is proud and thankful for having been in a position to render essential services, in particular the payment of Sassa grants to the vulnerable, the elderly and disabled, who depend completely on their social grants to survive.”

The list of post offices that remain open is available at www.postoffice.co.za.
