Heavy loads cause a problem at Midrand Industrial Park

MIDRAND – The Midrand Industrial Park is urging the JRA to upgrade their roads.

The Midrand Industrial Park has struggled with poor roads in their complex and are urging the Johannesburg Road Agency to upgrade them.

Manager of the industrial park Shaun Wilson said, “The roads have not been designed to keep up with heavy loads that are transported in the park. There are trucks moving that carry up to 220 tonnes. When it rains, potholes come around, and water has collected underneath the roads.”

The park houses a number of businesses that use the road to transfer heavy duty goods such as building supplies and machinery. Wilson added, “We also have two sand roads in the park. In a park like this we shouldn’t have two sand roads.”

Wilson said that he has had meetings with the agency stating the concerns of the park. The agency does come through to the park and spends some time fixing potholes in the park, but leaves and when the rain comes the work is undone and potholes redevelop.

An additional concern in the park is a bridge that runs through it. “We’ve got this vlei that runs through the park and when it rains the water runs over the bridge and affects the gabion boxes and the roads around the bridge to avoid it from collapsing,” said Wilson.

He added that the JRA has to come through to the park and redoes the roads completely to upgrade the road.

JRA spokesperson Zoleka Jika confirmed that the JRA had been to the area and fixed the roads in the park. But at this time, the agency would need to do further investigation in order to determine what can be done moving forward.
